چکیده

It has been subjected to the Agency's peer and administrative reviews and has been approved for publication as an EPA document. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation for use. iii Foreword The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged by Congress with protecting the Nation's land, air, and water resources. Under a mandate of national environmental laws, the Agency strives to formulate and implement actions leading to a compatible balance between human activities and the ability of natural systems to nurture life. To meet this mandate, EPA's research program is providing data and technical support for solving environmental problems today and building a science knowledge base necessary to manage our ecological resources wisely, understand how pollutants affect our health, and prevent or reduce environmental risks in the future. The National Risk Management Research Laboratory is the Agency's center for investigation of technological and management approaches for reducing risks from threats to human health and the environment. The focus of the Laboratory's research program is on methods for the prevention and control of pollution to air, land, water and subsurface resources; protection of water quality in public water systems; remediation of contaminated sites and groundwater; and prevention and control of indoor air pollution. The goal of this research effort is to catalyze development and implementation of innovative, cost-effective environmental technologies; develop scientific and engineering information needed by EPA to support regulatory and policy decisions; and provide technical support and information transfer to ensure effective implementation of environmental regulations and strategies. This publication has been produced as part of the Laboratory's strategic long-term research plan. It is published and made available by EPA's Office of Research and Development to assist the user community and to link researchers with their clients. Abstract The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has focused on policy, technical, and informational issues related to exploring and applying new technologies to Superfund site remediation. One EPA initiative to accelerate the development, demonstration, and use of innovative technologies for site remediation is the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program. The SITE Program evaluated the ZENON Environmental, Inc. (ZENON), Cross-Flow Pervaporation technology, a membrane-based process that removes volatile organic compounds (VOC) from aqueous matrices. The ZENON technology provides an alternative approach to treating organic-contaminated water at sites where conventional treatment technologies are used, such as air stripping or carbon adsorption. A full-scale demonstration …

Executive Summary - Evaluation Of The Cross-Flow Pervaporation Technology

This report summarizes the findings of an evaluation of the cross-flow pervaporation technology developed by ZENON Environmental, Inc. (ZENON). This evaluation was conducted under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program. The ZENON pervaporation technology was demonstrated over a 5-day period in February 1995 at Naval Air Station N...

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY REPORT CROSS-FLOW PERVAPORATION SYSTEM FOR REMOVAL OF VOCs FROM CONTAMINATED WASTEWATER

The U.S. Federal Register of April 17, 1987, contains a list of priority pollutants found at Superfund Sites. About half of these are volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), which are known to be toxic and/or carcinogenic in nature. Pervaporation is a membrane technology utilizing a dense non-porous polymeric film to separate the contaminated water from a vacuum source. A membrane is used that pref...

Influences of Permeate Pressure and Feed Flow Rate on Benzene Removal from Gasoline by Pervaporation

In this work, the effects of permeate pressure and feed flow rate on the performance of a composite polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membrane in the removal of benzene from gasoline by pervaporation (PV) were evaluated. The results indicate the remarkable effect of permeate pressure on membrane performance as reducing permeate pressure (higher vacuum) from 30 to 3 mmHg causes the total flux to increase ...

Effects of Permeate Pressure and Feed Flow Rate on Benzene Dehydration by Pervaporation

Membrane-based pervaporation (PV) has attracted much attention in the dehydration of organic solvents. Permeate pressure and feed flow rate are two important parameters, which affect membrane performance in pervaporation. The effects of these two parameters on the performance of a commercial poly (vinyl alcohol) membrane in the dehydration of benzene have been investigated in this work. The exp...
